Building leaders for tomorrow
Horse and Rider Connection (HARC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has helped teens and horses in southern Maine since 2009.
Our mission: is to pair rescue horses with teens and young adults facing life challenges, to help them develop and improve life skills.
Both the horses and the humans benefit; teens develop confidence,
leadership and communication skills, and the horses transform into safe,
willing partners.

Since 2009, Horse and Rider Connection has helped countless teens and young adults, and has successfully found permanent homes for many rescue horses.
Maine leads the nation in diagnosed anxiety among teenagers, according to Kids Count Data Book. When teens struggle with anxiety or depression, their performance in school, their relationships, and life skills are significantly hindered. And with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to impact our rural state, we expect even more teens will find themselves struggling with maintaining mental health.
HARC offers a safe space for teens to work on personal growth, and a temporary home for unwanted horses. Horses are hugely beneficial for personal growth; horses are mirrors, reflecting the feelings of their handlers. This is especially helpful for teens who need help identifying and working through challenges like stress or fear.
The life-changing work HARC does is needed now more than ever before. Teens are experiencing significant levels of anxiety and depression, combined with the stresses of a world turned upside down. HARC offers programs to help give teens a healthy outlet, and prepares horses for productive lives.
